Video game used to criticize Kansas Governor Sam Brownback

Thread Brownback's Cuts

George Walker, a student from Kansas State University came up with a creative way to express his criticism of Sam Brownback, the governor of Kansas. The governor has faced a significant amount of criticism stemming from reports of job losses, public school shaming, and school funding cutbacks.

Walker, a 20-year-old computer science major expressed,

“So many of these cuts directly affect students like me. Even looking at the most recent cuts, that’s the kind of thing that inspired me to make the game.”

Brownback Game DescriptionAs with the original Flappy Bird, it is nearly impossible to actually progress further than just a few moments. With this in mind, Walker has an “About this Game” button that explains the concept clearly. Walker’s frustration is mutual for many residents in his area, with the Kansas governor having an approval rate of just 26 percent from state voters. The game was Walker’s way to get his message out in a fun, irritatingly obvious way.

The game itself follows the general design and rules of Flappy Bird. To play, you pick one of the Kansas emblems of higher education, then you attempt to dodge Brownback’s face, which represent his tax cuts.

How do people find this game?

Brownback's cutsThread Brownback’s Cuts was created shortly after the Kansas Degree Stats website was created by the Kansas Board of Regents. Although they bought “ksdegreestats.org” they did not purchase “kansasdegreestats.org”. Many government entities will purchase similar domain names to help ensure that people who mean to get to their site actually do. This is also done in politics and for some brands to prevent competitors or criticizers from creating a prank or satirical website to represent their image. However, since the Board of Regents did not purchase the other domain name, Walker was able to purchase it  and have it redirect users to the Brown Back Game.
