Indie games dominate the BAFTA awards

BAFTA Game Awards

At 2016’s British Academy Games Awards (BAFTA), the best game of the year was awarded to Fallout 4. This is the first time the Bathesda, a US-based developer has won the prize. Although the night’s biggest award went to them, they were the only big budget developer success of the evening and that was the only award they won.

Three independent titles, Her Story, Everybody’s Gone to Rapture and Rocket League stole the night. Each title won three separate awards.

Her Story

Her Story

This game won awards for Debut Game, Mobile and Handheld Game and Game Innovation. The game is a crime detective game that follows non-linear storytelling. The game revolves around a police database with live action footage that the players search through and watch in an attempt to ascertain her guilt for the crime.

On the Her Story website, developer Sam Barlow explains,

“If you can Google, you can play Her Story. The mechanic of searching for clips in the database is so simple that anyone can pick up and play. But it’s a mechanic that quickly reveals its richness and complexity. At times it can feel like you’re engaged in a genuine dialogue with this woman and her story. It’s a unique way to interact with a narrative, a sculptural way of viewing a story — and something that can only be done interactively.”

The game itself was created on a microbudget, by Sam Barlow, who is also the creator of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Aisle.

Everybody’s Gone to Rapture

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture

This apocalyptic exploration game, developed by the The Chinese Room, best known for their experimental first-person games, won the awards for Best Music and Audio Achievement, largely in part to Jessica Curry’s haunting score in the game. In addition to those awards, actress Merle Dandridge won Best Performance for her role in the game as Kate.

A sample from the game’s soundtrack is available via the Everybody’s Gone to Rapture website.

Rocket League

Rocket League

This online, physics-based, multiplayer sports title combines motor racing and football, and won awards for Family, Multiplayer and Best Sports Game. In some of those categories it competed with some popular mainstream titles including FIFA 16, Lego Dimensions and Destiny. Some of the game’s unique draws include the flexibility for multiplayer splitscreen and online capabilities. It offers a unique 4-player splitscreen mode that can be played locally or online and also has an option for 8-player online action, where team sizes and configurations can be changed.
